SENIOR XVIII

In their final game of season 2025, the Magpies were keen to send coach Dave Gleeson off on a winning note.

Back into the side were Will Jackson and Linc McKernan at the expense of Andrew Bell (unavailable) and Jacob Gleeson (injured).

The first quarter was an even affair, with both sides booting a couple of goals each.

Passages of play were at times frustratingly messy as the two evenly matched teams pressured one another well.

United took advantage of a swirly wind in the second quarter, kicking four goals to Euroa’s two to hold the upper hand at the main break.

Centre clearance dominance from United was something coach Dave Gleeson and his assistants Neale Poole and Chris Burke were keen to stop.

Marcus Varley was the answer here, turning back the clock with a determined and disciplined effort in the second half.

Euroa slightly outscored United in the third term, despite being a man down for half the quarter.

Injuries were mounting; a hamstring late in the second quarter meant Will Creevey took no further part in the match, while a couple of other niggles restricted several Magpie players.

The last quarter was a ripper.

Euroa outscored United, but only just, and ultimately it was not enough to have their noses in front at the final siren.

Ryan Hill kept up his pressure and cool headed approach throughout, with the physical presence of Max Gleeson in the midfield a highlight.

Jack McKernan was again massive in the ruck, shouldering the load for much of the match.

Season 2025 drew to a close with an eight point loss.

The club thanks all players across the three football and five netball teams who represented Euroa this year.

Particular mention goes to outgoing coach Dave Gleeson, whose leadership, poise and depth of experience have been first class over the last 12 months.

His communication skills have been exemplary, and together with assistants Neale and Chris, he has been invaluable this season.

Euroa reserves go down to Shepparton United

As the season has been a real battle for the reserves, the last game of the year was no different.

With a number of players promoted to the seniors, it was always going to be tough.

Luckily, Euroa was able to field a full side, giving confidence to take the opposition on from the first quarter.

It was an even contest early and the team was up for the task.

As always, James Henry was excellent, quickly moving the ball forward and leading strongly in the ruck.

Good support came from Nic Thomson, Nic McCabe and Mitch Penman.

At half time, the side was quietly confident, but Shepparton United soon took control and slowly broke away for a convincing win.

Euroa gave its all, as they have all year.

Several players have the potential to take big steps with a strong pre season.

The club thanks all reserves players for their efforts in 2025, helping field competitive teams and giving supporters plenty to cheer for on Saturdays.
