Avenel Senior Football Club has secured the signature of senior coach Josh JD Delaney for another season, with the player-coach set to lead the team into 2026.

Sitting eighth on the ladder in 2025, Avenel will be aiming to build on this year’s foundations and push for a stronger campaign next year.

“This is my first year as player-coach, and I’m pretty excited to be going into my second year,” JD said.

“The best thing for me has been seeing the development in players who may have had limited opportunities.

"Whether that’s playing reserves or being stuck in a position they weren’t comfortable with, watching them grow and take their game to a new level has been a real highlight.”

Delaney confirmed the club will be active in the player market but will be selective.

“We always want to improve our list in any way, shape or form," JD said.

"We’ve identified potential recruits, but it’s about making sure they fit into what we’re planning to achieve.

You can recruit any type of player, but identifying our wants and needs is something we’re looking at heavily.”

Taking on the dual role has brought its challenges for Delaney and he is candid about the experience.

“Being a playing coach is new to me.

"It’s been a big learning curve and you’re not going to get everything right the first time.

"But having that experience now, I know I’ll only get better for the players.”

Despite missing finals, JD said belief remained strong until late in the year.

“Being in the hunt until a couple of rounds to go was a driving force, and my message to the boys was to keep building.

"I always remind them: ‘Why do you play footy?’

"Take it back to when you were a kid and all that mattered was having a kick with your mates.

"We can’t lose that focus.”

Delaney highlighted several players who have stood out this season.

"Zac Hill - not the prettiest footballer - but his ferocity is something opposition clubs fear.

"His game has gone to a new level.

"Tyson McComb was touted as just a reserves footballer, but every week he’s grown in a tough position at full back.”

"Clayton Salmon came across from Seymour and I can’t believe how good this bloke is - he trains at a high level every week and his footy shows it.”

Delaney believes the foundations are in place for a rise up the ladder.

“Watching our game plan come to fruition has been amazing.

"When the boys understand it and play the way we want, it’s rewarding for everyone.

"If we can keep building on what we’ve got and add a few players to fill specific roles, we’ll be in a great position.”

JD’s re-signing signals stability and belief, as Avenel sets its sights firmly on turning hard-earned lessons into on-field success in 2026.
