THE Euroa Magpies Basketball Under 18 Boys team took to the courts in Ballarat over last weekend, competing in the Basketball Victoria Country Championships.

Playing pool games on the Saturday against Horsham and Foster the boys then faced Wallan in a crossover game to determine their grading for the finals on the Sunday.

With a win over Wallan, the team were placed in division four for their finals and were drawn to play Ararat in their quarter final, needing a win to advance in the knock out finals competition.

Euroa took an early lead with impressive defence frustrating the Ararat boys and then continued to pressure the opposition throughout the remainder of the first half.

The second half started with Ararat trying to reduce the margin and saw Euroa having to withstand their surge and reinstate their advantage to close out the game taking an 11 point win.

With their next opponent in the semi–final being Melton, the young Euroa boys looked to make an impact on their opponent, who had shown a lot of scoring ability in their pool games the previous day.

Euroa showed patience and composure only giving up their lead at the half time buzzer to go into the second half down by two.

The second half was a battle for every possession and saw Melton ultimately gain control late in the game to progress to the final outlasting a gallant Euroa.

The boys did themselves and everyone involved with the team proud with their efforts and showed they are more than capable at that level.

The Euroa Magpies Basketball representative season now draws to a close and the association is hoping for bigger and better things as they look to next season.
