Having been in the media world for almost 60 years now, I have seen the industry grow in both publications and technology – from manual typewriters to computers and now the world of digital / social media.

For me it has been almost a lifelong journey.

I always liked writing, particularly essays and in more recent years have enjoyed research – seeking the truth and finer points of topical subjects – getting to the truth and the true story.

I have climbed the ranks of the media having covered almost every aspect during my years – from typesetter, compositor (now called paginator), to writing, reporting, editing and investigating - it has all been very worthwhile.

I most recently spent some 15 months as a group editor for Riverina Media (an offshoot of NE Media) in NSW and edited five newspapers each week for that group – all rural papers – all very different and yet many aspects the same.

Over my time as a cadet – then into becoming a senior journalist and even an editor, I have also encouraged many cadets/students in pursuing careers in media – particularly in journalism.

If you have an inquisitive mind and have a good grasp of the English language then it could be for you.

Several cadets I have mentored have gone on to greater things. One young girl who completed a school-based apprenticeship went on to a university degree, then was offered a scholarship with a New York fashion house and last I heard was working in London.

Another has become an editor with a state-wide rural newspaper while another young lad has become a public relations mentor for a politician.

The world of journalism and media can take you around the world and back again – all you need is enthusiasm, a keen interest in local and world-wide news and some technology in computers, which most young people these days have – even better than me.

Would I recommend the media and its ever-growing expansion of knowledge and news? Yes, I would recommend it to any young person in particular – the world of journalism (including public relations) can place the world at your feet. Get out there enjoy, explore and expand – the three ‘e’s’.

At the age of 76 I am still working, enjoying life, encouraged by the world of media – in all its aspects and still aim at travelling the world exploring what is happening in other countries, including war-torn zones, areas of political unrest and just plain tourism and travel options.
