THE Euroa Bridge Club is delighted to be back playing bridge in the Euroa Age Club room, and they are looking for more bridge players to take part.
After being closed in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions the group had to find a new location to ensure they could meet all social distancing regulations.
Local player and expert George Wagner, who not only joins the Euroa group to pass on advice and expertise, also plays the card game four days a week locally in nearby clubs from Benalla to Nagambie.
“It's second only to chess for your mind, and if you like mathematics, that’s a big plus because bridge, in a way, is just a good way to even get more into mathematics.” Mr Wagner said.
“Even though we had this time off, I never forgot how to play it because I love it so much, and I would even say that’s all I do from Monday to Thursday.”
Mr Wagner – who also regularly attends conferences of bridge players in Adelaide and the Gold Coast – said the game is always a great way to meet new friends, and new players can get as serious or casual as they like.
“You can possibly play over Australia if you wish, and I know of people who dedicate travel to play the came down in Melbourne at the Victorian Bridge Association,” Mr Wagner said.
“It’s a lifestyle for you if you are serious enough!”
Mr Wagner said all you need is common sense and a basic knowledge of arithmetic to get started in the card game.
But he was happy to help out anyone who was willing to pop along for one of their meetings in the rules of the game who may not know any rules.
“If we can get enough people interested, we would run lessons, probably over a two week, a 10 week span, possibly an hour and a half, but feel free to come by and introduce yourself to the game as well,” Mr Wagner said.
Sessions are held on Monday afternoons at the Third Age Club in Kirkland Avenue, commencing at 1pm and new players are always welcome.
Those who are interested in joining the club or wish to take part in lessons can contact Bev Asquith on 5795 1347 or Helen Peters on 0427 380 662.
