Police are investigating a fatal collision on the Hume Freeway at Avenel on the afternoon of Wednesday, 30 July, which saw the southbound lands closed for over an hour, forcing vehicles to detour from Violet Town to Seymour.
Emergency services were called to Hume Freeway, near the intersection of Lambing Gully Road, after a truck went down an embankment and crashed into trees about 1pm.
Victoria Police said in a statement that the truck caught on fire following the crash.
The driver, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.
Officers are working to establish the circumstances of the crash.
