Arb’ deals with foxes, miners

Culling has begun at the Euroa Arboretum this week to help with animal pest control.

Until the end of November, residents are advised that the Arb' will be closed every Monday and Thursday evening until the end of November for licensed shooters to deal with foxes and noisy miners.

The culling is being undertaken with a pest management permit and professional contractors.

Brontë Haines said the spike in pest numbers was the result of this year's drought forcing more animals to the area.

"The Arb is the one place that still has reasonable food resources," Ms Haines said.

"The noisy miners are really the issue and although they're a native species, they overpopulate areas and never leave.

"And they are real bullies - they literally beat up other birds because they are seriously territorial and will increase their numbers."

Ms Haines said the species was also 'incredibly' intelligent, knowing how to avoid capture in traps.

"And they flock - even taunting humans as they walk past."

The permit was granted after thorough and diligent oversight.
