Volunteers’ dedication in the spotlight

FOR volunteer week many volunteers in the community got to see their dedicated work recognised.

For instance, Strathbogie Shire Council organised a morning tea, certificate presentation and movie screening.

Strathbogie Shire Council has more than 80 volunteers across its visitor information centres, the Euroa Community Cinema, its committees of management and community action groups.

Above and beyond members of the Strathbogie Shire community volunteer for emergency services, sport and leisure clubs, art and craft clubs, environmental groups, men’s sheds and much more.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Chris Raeburn said the tireless efforts of volunteers made up the foundation of communities across Australia.

“Without volunteers being a part of our community, we would not have such a vibrant community,” Cr Raeburn said.

“I would like to thank all of the volunteers across Strathbogie Shire for dedicating their time to making sure our community is a fantastic place to live and visit.”

The event was also attended by Euroa MP Steph Ryan who helped to present certificates to volunteers from across the Strathbogie Shire.

The Strathbogie Shire Council’s Volunteers Day was held last at the Euroa Community Cinema.

After spending more than 40 years as Euroa Secondary College’s librarian, Di Mackrell was eager to lend her skills to the community in retirement.

Originally from the United States of America, Ms Mackrell runs a local choir and ukulele group which she has been doing for the past 10 years.

It was after her retirement four years ago that Di also began volunteering at The Hub – Euroa’s Visitor Information Centre.

“It is amazing the amount of people you meet there,” she said.

After also seeing an advert calling on volunteers for the Euroa Community Cinema, Di also wanted to lend a hand.

“It is such a good service for our community,” she said.

“I was happy to give up a couple of nights a month, it’s such a small part of your time.”

For Ms Mackrell, volunteering gives her a great sense of pride.

“You really do get back just as much as you give,” she said.

Cherie Hill works as a volunteer at the Beach on Binney Street and she likes bringing something to the community.

“I feel like I'm just doing something for the community and it makes me feel good,” Ms Hill said.

Noelle Elsegood is a volunteer at Granite Hill aged care where she works as barmaid.

“I really enjoy volunteering in the cafe and bar at GraniteHill, as I feel I am making the residents feel happy,” Ms Elsegood said.

“They love getting a good coffee in their home when they like.

“They also love the fact that they can attend the bar when they like and not have to depend on someone to take them out.

“The Happy Hour on Friday until Sunday are well attended and something they look forward to.

“It gives me pleasure making them feel at home in their place; I am really enjoying what I do.”

Ms Elsegood said the volunteers had a delightful afternoon tea at council.

“It was well attended and the spread was excellent,” she said.

Ellie Beadle is a volunteer for Euroa parkrun assisting the 8am Saturday morning Euroa parkrun event each week.

"I have competed most volunteer roles at Euroa parkrun, mostly as the run director," Ms Beadle said.

"I have volunteered since our launch May 2018 a total of 62 times.

"I have completed the parkrun course either walking or running 27 times at 14 different locations.

"I love parkrun because it doesn’t matter who you are, what your fitness level you can be part of a community of happy 'parkrunners' either by participants or volunteering."

John Beadle said he volunteered when he couldn’t walk the whole 5km.

"Parkrun gives me a change to meet new people locally and from around Australia and the world," Mr Beadle said.

"Volunteering there is a benefit to the community."

Renee Drysdale is of the two Parkrun event directors

"I started volunteering at Parkrun when it was just a brainstorm, which soon became a group of core volunteers who are the heart of Euroa Parkrun but are always looking for more people to step up and join in and share it all around," Ms Drysdale said.

"I get a lot of pleasure seeing people conquer goals, for some people the thought of walking 5km is enormous and for them to do it regularly and ...
