A lack of confidence and the wrong parental encouragement are said to be the main reasons school-aged children drop out of competitive sports by age 15.

New research released last week said nearly 40 per cent of teenagers are expected to quit sport in the next five years, with the exodus being felt more in regional areas where sport is the heartbeat of the community.
