Euroa gets a dose of Dr Karl

Science students at Euroa Secondary College had quite a treat on Friday 22 August when science broadcaster Dr Karl Kruszelnicki visited for one of his popular presentations.

Famous for his fact-packed talks and accompanying screen show, the nation's most famous science voice covered every topic from super computers to vaccines, with everything else seemingly jammed in between.

Dr Karl is a passionate voice for science who fills all of his tales with the hard data from his sources, dispels popular myths and inspires the next generation by giving them hope.

He told the ESC students that they were in a good place with what technology will bring for their generation - including much longer human lives - and for how it will help solve the world's problems.

"Your teachers won't like me saying this," Dr Karl told the audience.

"But you are smarter than your teachers.

"There's this thing called the Flynn effect and what it means is that the average IQ is increasing all the time, about three points a year.

"That means that your average IQ will be nine points higher than your teachers."

Dr Karl then confessed to not having a high IQ but put down his wealth of knowledge to simply being well-educated.

His anecdotes were entertaining and informative, drawing from a scene in The Godfather and even breaking into the Robert Palmer song 'Doctor Doctor' after explaining that his second doctorate was only an honorary one.

Climate change was the feature topic for the morning, with Kruszelnicki providing updated evidence on how it was first recognised, then became a problem, and now faces one simple solution.

"Keep the fossil carbon in the ground," he said.

Next week: Karl Kruszelnicki visits an energy expo in Avenel.
