SIX preventable house fires were recorded in the Shire of Strathbogie last financial year, resulting in either extensive damage to, or the complete destruction of the dwelling, according to the CFA.
Across the state there were 3098 preventable house fires in 2016, an average of more than eight a day.
These fires resulted in the deaths of 14 people, and a total damage bill of over $88 million.
The preventable nature of those fires meant that these are figures “the public should not accept,” according to MFB acting chief officer Paul Stacchino.
“There was a 3.5 per cent drop in total preventable residential fires last year, which suggests that people are becoming more conscious about fire safety, which is heartening,” he said.
“But there are still more than 3000 preventable residential fires in Victoria each year which are mostly avoidable.
