Extra $40 million for North East line

THE Coalition Government has committed a further $40 million towards an upgrade to the North East rail line.

Steph Ryan (MLA, Euroa) said she was “over the moon” following confirmation that the Federal Nationals have increased their commitment to the line.

Federal Infrastructure Minister Darren Chester officially announced the funding yesterday on top of the $100 million he announced in May.

Ms Ryan said she has lobbied strongly for the investment in the troubled line, which continues to be among the worst performing in Victoria.

“In total the Commonwealth will now invest $140 million to upgrade the track so that trains run faster and more smoothly,” Ms Ryan said.

“A joint working group will be set up between the Victorian and Commonwealth governments to manage oversight of the project but, in light of the ARTC’s previous failings, it is vitally important that the community is also involved in the project.”
