A SURPRISE 90th birthday party was recently held at the Violet Town Bush Nursing Centre for volunteer Dot Rae to commemorate her outstanding commitment.
Dot, who turned 90 at the end of last month, still delivers meals on wheels, bakes biscuits weekly and provides social support to residents at the centre among several other community contributions.
Lifestyle co-ordinator at Honeysuckle Regional Health Madonna Logue said the party was held in the Dementia Unit to commemorate Dot’s outstanding commitment to volunteerism.
“Dot’s husband was a resident and this is her way of giving back,” Ms Logue said.
Ms Logue organised the surprise in conjunction with Dot’s daughter Robbie Rae who said Dot is also still involved in a number of other community commitments.
Robbie said Dot also volunteers as a stationeer, looking after the gardens around the railway station and organising working bees to clean up the grounds.
“She locks the waiting room every day and pops up every couple of days to sweep, clean the office, waiting room and toilet, tidy and garden,” she said.
“She delivers Meals on Wheels every Sunday and fills in when people are away, forget to do it or are sick as well as co-ordinating the roster.”
