Job barrier for youths

Federal MP believes the mindset of youth plays a role in unemployment and job vacancies

FEDERAL parliamentarian Sharman Stone (MHR, Murray) visited Euroa on Thursday to discuss Federal Government issues with shire residents.

She was joined by community members who raised a variety of national issues, particularly those affecting rural and regional areas.

Ms Stone spoke candidly and directly with residents on issues such as changes to the pension, gas and fuel reserves, alcohol advertising, energy sources, feral and native animal life and youth unemployment.

An issue of local concern was youth unemployment, particularly around the Shepparton area, where a resident suggested getting an employment officer for the Euroa Community Education Centre.

Ms Stone said that one of the major problems contributing to youth unemployment was the mindset of young people.

“We have a high rate of youth unemployment, yet there are jobs at places like abattoirs going begging,” she said.
