Guilty over fatal crash

McPherson pleads guilty to two counts of culpable driving

A FORMER Violet Town man has been remanded in custody after pleading guilty to two counts of culpable driving.

Jamie McPherson, 70, appeared in Melbourne’s Supreme Court last Thursday and formally entered guilty pleas to the charges.

They relate to the death of brothers Fred and Gary Whearem in a fatal car crash on the Calder Highway at Glenalbyn, 60 kilometres north-west of Bendigo, on January 4 last year.

McPherson is to appear at a Bendigo Court for a pre-sentence hearing on Thursday next week.

McPherson’s friend and co-accused, Shayne Sargent of Wedderburn, has pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving and has been released on bail.

In evidence before the court, the Crown said McPherson had been in an ongoing family related dispute with the Whearem brothers.
