Hopes to bring Redlegs back from darker days

‘NO WALK OVER WINS’: New senior coach for the Longwood Football Club Matthew Sacco wants to bring glory back to the Redlegs, after the senior team finished last on the KDFL ladder in 2014.

NEW Longwood seniors coach Matthew Sacco knows what it’s like to bring a football team back to its former glory.

In two years, he completely changed the dynamic of the Jacana Football Club, with the seniors outfit going from losing games by up to 350 points to fielding two men’s, one women’s and five junior teams.

The Melbourne-based Sacco was approached by the Redlegs halfway through January after the shock departure of Joe D’Angelis, who stepped away from Longwood due to personal reasons.

D’Angelis was poised to replace Matthew Chilcott, who coached the seniors only for the 2014 season, when the Redlegs finished at the bottom of the Kyabram District Football League (KDFL) ladder.

Sacco explained the club, now led by president Mark Goodall, looked at his coaching credentials and thought he was a good fit for the team.

“I decided to take the job on, in leaps and bounds,” he said.
