LIBERAL candidate for Euroa Tony Schneider has thrown his support behind the investigation into the better management of the Strathbogie State Forest if elected into government this week.
His commitment comes after a meeting he facilitated for the Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith earlier this month, who inspected the forest and met with concerned citizens.
Mr Schenider was approached early in his campaign by the community, concerned that a review by the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council (VEAC) had not been undertaken in 30 years.
The Strathbogie Sustainable Forest Group (SSFG) is concerned that state logging agency VicForests had reportedly failed to properly regenerate areas harvested over the past 10 years and requests an independent inquiry take place into the future of the forests.
Mr Schneider said the commitment from not just Strathbogie residents, but others in the region was there and a Liberal government would honor a commitment into investigating the issue further.
“This issue is definitely something worth following up. I was briefed extensively about this and their (the residents’) case is very reasonable and worth pursuing.
