Fire season starts in district

THE 2014/15 Fire Danger Period has officially begun, with heavy restrictions in place for Strathbogie Shire residents.

As of 1am on Monday, the Fire Danger Period started in the Strathbogie Shire, earlier this year due to low spring rainfall combined with warm conditions, meaning the grass has dried out faster.

This means that fire restrictions are now in place and hefty fines and even imprisonment are imminent for residents lighting a fire in the open without a permit.

Euroa Urban Fire Brigade community support officer Garry Kenyon said residents could still get prepared in the event of a fire but they must be incredibly conscious of the restrictions in place.

“Burning off is not permitted during the Fire Danger Period and people will be fined if they are caught,” he said.

“People need to be rigorous with their activities during this period.
