THE secret to the best vanilla slice may not be in the recipe but can be found in the time taken to get it right.
This was the scenario for Euroa Hot Bread pastry chef apprentice Kathryn O’Brien, who came in to work, sometimes on her days off, to make the perfect vanilla slice.
It seems her hard work has paid off, with her receiving second prize at the Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph apprentice award category at Merbein recently.
With the help of head baker Rob Beanham, Ms O’Brien was able to take home the second place trophy, which has been one of many the bakery has won over the last six months.
“We are so happy about the trophy,” Ms O’Brien said.
“It’s hard to believe I was able to achieve something like this after working as an apprentice for three months.
